National Conference on Climate Change and Its Impacts on Society

(25 Mizan 1403 / 16 October 2024 – Kabul Serena Hotel, Kabul, Afghanistan)

On October 16, 2024 (25th of Mizan 1403, Solar Hijri Calendar), the Communication Office in collaboration with the Climate and Environment Coordination Platform organized a conference titled “Climate Change and Its Impacts on Society” at Kabul Serena Hotel.

Participants from 34 provinces of the country, representatives of national and international institutions, and relevant organizations attended the conference to discuss and exchange views on this vital crisis.

The conference began with group work aimed at examining challenges, problems, and climate-related concerns across Afghanistan. Groups shared their recommendations for improving the climate situation and strategies to cope with climate change, which were further discussed in a technical session with participants and relevant officials.

Distinguished speakers, including the Director General of the National Environmental Protection Agency, the UN Representative for Afghanistan, the Chargé d’Affaires of the European Union to Afghanistan, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Water, and an advisor to the Ministry of Energy and Water, addressed the conference. Each emphasized the importance of both international and domestic cooperation in tackling the climate crisis. Their collective message was clear: the time has come for urgent and practical action, and Afghanistan needs national mobilization alongside international support to confront climate change.

The core objective of this program was to collect the challenges and concerns of the people regarding climate change and present them to the relevant institutions, in order to propose practical solutions for protecting the environment and improving the country’s climate condition. Moreover, the conference was held as part of the commemoration of Global Climate Week and to raise public awareness on this critical issue.

Climate change is not only an environmental issue but also a human and social crisis. This conference demonstrated that through greater awareness and cooperation, practical solutions can be developed to improve Afghanistan’s climate situation and highlight the country’s role in global efforts against climate change.
